PRACTICE OVERVIEW

Mr. Sykes’ principal areas of practice are real estate law, commercial and residential transactions and settlements; development law, condominium formation, tax free exchanges and commercial foreclosures. His clients include banks, builders, developers, mortgage companies, real estate brokers and every day purchasers. In addition, his experience and current practice encompasses trust and estate planning and administration, and the organization of business entities.

EXPERIENCE

Mr. Sykes is a native of Hampton Roads and lives in Virginia Beach. He has practiced law in the area for over 37 years. Mr. Sykes has received a “BV” rating by Martindale-Hubbell and a member of Virginia’s Legal Elite.

EDUCATION; BAR ADMISSIONS; AUTHORSHIPS

Mr. Sykes received a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors and Distinction from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He graduated from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary, where he received his Juris Doctor Degree and a Masters of Law and Taxation Degree. Mr. Sykes is a member of Phi Sigma Alpha; Omicron Delta Kappa, Omicron Delta Epsilon, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Delta Phi.

In addition, Mr. Sykes has presented seminars and co-authored the written materials for the “Keys to Success in Real Estate Transactions in Virginia”; “Basic Real Estate Law in Virginia”; and “Boundary Law in Virginia”. Mr. Sykes has also lectured on “Basic Real Estate Law” and “Use of Computers in Real Estate Law”. He is admitted to practice before the Virginia State Bar.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Mr. Sykes is a member of the Virginia State Bar and Virginia Beach Bar Association (Sections on Real Property, Probate & Trust Law, Business Law and Law Practice Management); Member of the Virginia Beach Board of Directors and Executive Committee of TowneBank, former Director of The Bank of Tidewater; one of the Founders of Tidewater Home Funding, L.L.C.; Founding Counsel to the Tidewater Mortgage Bankers Association; and a member of the Tidewater Builders Association; Hampton Roads Board of Realtors and the Central Business District Association.

CIVIC ACTIVITIES

Mr. Sykes was one of the founding members of the Little Neck Swim and Racquet Club, a non-profit recreational facility; Legal counsel to the 24th Street Ocean Park Committee, Inc., a non-profit corporation that helped establish a park at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront; One of the founding members of the Middle Plantation Civic League; Lynnhaven Boys Baseball, and Legal counsel to Crystal Ball For a Cure, Inc., a non-profit corporation raising funds for research to find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy.
